Toth strolled through the dungeons of Phelos Palace. He’d been down here many times over the past year since Spy Pilot Ophala’s imprisonment, but it wasn’t his familiarity with the layout that allowed him to traverse the maze of corridors so easily. It was the woman’s whistling that led him to her cell.

Having prisoners of elite status in the dungeons wasn’t a normal routine. Usually they’d be in the secluded tower chambers like Itta used to be and Horos was now, but Ophala was a special case. She may have not possessed her ancient anymore, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t communicate with birds. She simply couldn’t control them.

Toth stood a couple feet away from the bars once he arrived. “Ophala.”

The woman paused while absentmindedly braiding her hair on her mattress. “I look forward to these visits,” she said. “It’s lonely without my birds.”

“I come today on a somber note.”

“Am I to die soon?”

“Yes.”

“Will I get to see my husband beforehand?”

“You will.”

“That’s nice.” She finished her braid and finally looked over at Toth. “Are you looking forward to seeing it?”

“I will avoid the show like I did with Rhyparia.”

Ophala nodded, looking back at the wall as she started another braid. “A good man who lost his wife, then lost his way … unfortunate.”

“Why are you so accepting of this outcome?” Toth asked.

She frowned. “Who said I’ve accepted it?”

“Your demeanor, your tone, and your choice of words.”

“I was trained in the art of being a spy at a young age. I can be someone else when I need to.”

Toth’s eyes narrowed. “Should I be questioning who you are right now?”

“Mr. Brench,” she said with a smirk. “You waited entirely too long to ask yourself that question.”

He gripped a cell bar and scowled. “That’s somewhat smug advice, coming from a woman trapped in a block.”

“You sound like Wert … very unbefitting for you. Allow me to wish you a good night. Thank you for the company.”
