Toth strolled through the dungeons of Phelos Palace. Heâd been down here many times over the past year since Spy Pilot Ophalaâs imprisonment, but it wasnât his familiarity with the layout that allowed him to traverse the maze of corridors so easily. It was the womanâs whistling that led him to her cell.
Having prisoners of elite status in the dungeons wasnât a normal routine. Usually theyâd be in the secluded tower chambers like Itta used to be and Horos was now, but Ophala was a special case. She may have not possessed her ancient anymore, but that didnât mean she couldnât communicate with birds. She simply couldnât control them.
Toth stood a couple feet away from the bars once he arrived. âOphala.â
The woman paused while absentmindedly braiding her hair on her mattress. âI look forward to these visits,â she said. âItâs lonely without my birds.â
âI come today on a somber note.â
âAm I to die soon?â
âYes.â
âWill I get to see my husband beforehand?â
âYou will.â
âThatâs nice.â She finished her braid and finally looked over at Toth. âAre you looking forward to seeing it?â
âI will avoid the show like I did with Rhyparia.â
Ophala nodded, looking back at the wall as she started another braid. âA good man who lost his wife, then lost his way ⦠unfortunate.â
âWhy are you so accepting of this outcome?â Toth asked.
She frowned. âWho said Iâve accepted it?â
âYour demeanor, your tone, and your choice of words.â
âI was trained in the art of being a spy at a young age. I can be someone else when I need to.â
Tothâs eyes narrowed. âShould I be questioning who you are right now?â
âMr. Brench,â she said with a smirk. âYou waited entirely too long to ask yourself that question.â
He gripped a cell bar and scowled. âThatâs somewhat smug advice, coming from a woman trapped in a block.â
âYou sound like Wert ⦠very unbefitting for you. Allow me to wish you a good night. Thank you for the company.â
